Michael Knight is an American fiction writer whose work spans novels, short stories and novellas. He is the author of "The Typist" — named a Best Book of the Year by The Huffington Post and The Kansas City Star and featured on Oprah’s Summer Reading List — and "Eveningland," winner of the Truman Capote Prize for Short Fiction. Knight’s work has appeared in The New Yorker, The Paris Review and Ploughshares, and he teaches creative writing at the University of Tennessee.

The MFA Writers' Salon is designed as a shared space for curiosity, reflection and connection where emerging and established writers can learn through conversation. During the spring 2026 semester, the salon will host six writers on Monday evenings. Sessions are open to all members of the campus community and the public.

Nations across the world seem increasingly divided, with citizens retreating into ideological, partisan or cultural tribes, often at times seemingly at the risk of overshadowing a shared national identity. This panel examines a central question: “What truly binds a nation together?”

Panelists

Desireé R. Melonas, Ph.D., is assistant professor of political science and Black studies at University of California, Riverside. Her work examines the politics of racialized place, Black feminist new materialisms, and radical care. Her scholarship has appeared in leading journals including “Meridians, Theory & Event, and Women’s Studies Quarterly,” and she serves as co-principal investigator on a National Academies Gulf Research Program grant supporting environmental justice-focused curriculum development in Africatown, Alabama.Vincent Gawronski, Ph.D., is visiting associate professor of international affairs at Berry College. He brings over three decades of research on natural hazards, disaster risk and climate change across the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean. His work focuses on how social inequalities, including race, gender and geographic vulnerability shape disaster impacts and recovery, and he currently co-leads a National Academies-funded project empowering youth to address coastal environmental challenges.Jonathan Hack, Ph.D., is director of partnerships and engagement at Harvard’s Edmond & Lily Safra Center for Ethics, where he builds strategic collaborations across universities, government, civil society and philanthropy to advance the center’s research and public programming. His work centers on strengthening democratic culture and civic engagement—helping institutions design the norms, practices and systems that sustain pluralism, constructive disagreement and public trust. A scholar of American politics and constitutional law, Hack frequently comments on public life and democratic governance and advises stakeholders on strategy, research and institutional design.Together, the panelists bring perspectives from political science, ethics, Black studies, political theory and elsewhere to consider the question of “what binds a nation?.” This event is organized and moderated by Clinton Jenkins, Ph.D., assistant professor of political science at Lenoir-Rhyne.

Part of Bears Engage 2026: Voices of America, a year-long, nonpartisan series exploring the ideas shaping American democracy. The series highlights diverse perspectives on civic life, leadership and the nation’s evolving story.

This special Presidential Tour is your opportunity to connect with Dr. McGee personally, hear her vision for LR’s future and celebrate this historic moment for our university. With her dynamic leadership, deep commitment to students and passion for higher education, Dr. McGee is eager to meet LR alumni and friends across cities along the eastern United States.

Eady is a professor at the University of Tennessee and a co-founder of the Cave Canem Foundation, a nationally recognized organization supporting the artistic and professional growth of African American poets.

Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary will host its annual Yost Lecture as part of Alumni Day. The Yost Lecture, held in Belk Centrum, advances public theological discourse, and this year LTSS welcomes Vance Blackfox, a citizen of the Cherokee Nation and the ELCA’s director for Indigenous Ministries and Tribal Relations. Blackfox will speak on decolonization and the repudiation of the Doctrine of Discovery.

An afternoon town hall in Grace Chapel with LTSS faculty will follow the lecture.

The ARC-PA has granted Accreditation-Provisional status to the Lenoir-Rhyne University Master of Science in PA Studies sponsored by Lenoir-Rhyne University.

Accreditation-Provisional is an accreditation status granted when the plans and resource allocation, if fully implemented as planned, of a proposed program that has not yet enrolled students appear to demonstrate the program's ability to meet the ARC-PA Standards or when a program holding Accreditation-Provisional status appears to demonstrate continued progress in complying with the Standards as it prepares for the graduation of the first class (cohort) of students.

Accreditation-Provisional does not ensure any subsequent accreditation status. It is limited to no more than five years from matriculation of the first class.

The Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life presents this signature end-of-year celebration honoring the achievements of fraternity and sorority members.

This year’s theme, A Night of Distinction: Masquerade Ball, sets the stage for an elegant evening recognizing leadership, service and academic excellence. Guests are encouraged to wear formal attire and embrace the masquerade theme.

The evening includes:

Awards ceremony recognizing members and organizationsBuffet-style dinnerDesserts and nonalcoholic beveragesLive DJ and dancingAn open bar serving wine will be available for guests 21 and older (purchased individually).

Transportation will be provided for students, with shuttles departing from the Shuford Parking Lot every 30 minutes.

Open to all Lenoir-Rhyne University students. Each student may purchase one ticket and one guest ticket.

Experienced science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) teachers will facilitate learning experiences throughout the week. The program is designed for teacher-recommended students who have an interest in STEM, are interested in how things work and enjoy working with their hands to build things.

Both elementary and middle grades camps are available and open to students completing kindergarten through grade 4 (elementary) and those completing grades 5-8 (middle grades). Both camps have a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) focus. Students will utilize 21st-century skills, including critical thinking, collaboration, communication and creativity.

This program is designed for teacher-recommended students who meet any of the following criteria:

Have an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM).Are interested in how things work and working with their hands to build things.Recommended by their current teacher.
